Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State yesterday accused lecturers in
some higher institutions of being responsible for the increasing
incidences of sexual harassment and cultism in higher institutions in
the country.
Fayose, who expressed concern over the pervasive moral decadence in the country higher institutions,
said
lecturers who should be engaged in character moulding are themselves
guilty of sexual harassment and victimisation of the male students.
According
to him, lecturers also engage in Indian Hemp smoking and sponsorship of
cultism, describing these as dangerous to the development of education in Nigeria.
The
Governor said this during the 22nd convocation ceremony of the College
of Education, Ikere Ekiti, where over 2,000 graduates were churned out.
The
College through its Provost, Prof Francisca Aladejana also conferred on
Senator representing Ekiti South senatorial district, Mrs Biodun
Olujimi and the Chairman, Capitol Oil, Mr Ifeanyi Ubah with the
Fellowship of the College in view of their immense contributions to the
growth of education.
Fayose while lamenting the dwindling fortunes
of education in Nigeria appealed to the graduates to go out and
multiply in the most positive manners.
“Not multiplication in terms of money or fraud, but in morals and
good contributions to the development of this State and our dear
country.
“What pains me most is that some of our lecturers also,
who are to teach the morals are engaging in Indian Hemp smoking. They
harassed the female students sexually. They harassed the male students
as well.
“They should understand that these students they are
either harassing or victimizing could be theirs and they should know
that whatever we do shall count against us on the judgement day”, Fayose
said.
Fayose assured that he would place high premium on the
welfare of staff and improvement in the infrastructural facilities of
the College to make it a model among its peers.
The Provost of the
College urged the students to use the entrepreneurial studies acquired
in the institution to engage in self employment, so that they can
contribute meaningfully to the economy rather than spending years
searching for white collar jobs.
Aladejana, who described the
College of one of the best in the country added that the institution
would continue to strive to contribute to the economy of the State and
the country at large through effective teaching and raising of personnel
that could contribute to the growth
of education.
Meanwhile,
Governor Fayose, has said the state will further explore agricultural
opportunities which he discovered during his recent pilgrimage to
Israel.
In a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr
Idowu Adelusi, in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the governor made the disclosure
in an interview with newsmen after arriving from Israel.
“My trip
to Israel was both religious and economic. We went there to pray for
Ekiti State and Nigeria. There were other state governors from Benue,
Plateau and even the Speaker of the House of Representatives was there.
“By
God’s grace, our state will experience great rebirth in all
ramifications. I will use the fresh anointing from God to pray for our
dear state. The agricultural opportunities we found out in Israel, we
will further explore to bring the sector back to the forefront,” he
said.Commenting on the revelation by the Speaker of the House of
Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, that he prayed for him to
become the speaker, Fayose said all the glory belongs to God.
