An alleged fowl thief, Clement Omonoye,
and seven other inmates at the Benin Central Prison have been granted
freedom by the Edo State Justice Committee.
The inmates were released on Thursday
during a visit of the committee, led by its Chairman and state Chief
Judge, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, to the prison facility on Sapele
Road.
Omonoye was released on health grounds, having been diagnosed of ulcer.
Others were Ufuoma Peter, Lucky Edafe,
Blessing Joel, Jennifer Lucky and Phillips Kings, who was also released
on account of his poor health.
Earlier in his remarks, Justice Idahosa
reiterated the benefits of the new Administration of Criminal Justice
Act, 2015, which, he said, would increase efficiency in the country’s
judicial system.
He urged relevant stakeholders in the
judiciary to discharge their constitutional responsibility as at when
due, adding that it would not be business as usual, with the new law.
The Chief Judge also advised
magistrates and Presidents of Customary and Area Courts to be
expeditious in addressing cases brought before them so as to facilitate
the prompt dispensation of justice and decongest prison facilities
across the state.
