Woman, 60, struck and killed by van while crossing Brooklyn street

A woman died at Maimonides Medical Center after she was struck by a van in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
A homeless woman was fatally struck by a van as she tried to cross a Brooklyn street on Wednesday, officials said.
The victim, who is believed to be in her 50s, was crossing 65th St. against a red light near New Utrecht Ave. in Bensonhurst about 6:30 a.m. when the Ford van slammed into her on the rain-swept street, witnesses told cops.
The woman was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, but doctors were unable to save her.
Cops found no identification on her and were trying to find out who she was Wednesday night.
The 25-year-old van driver remained at the scene.
No charges were expected to be filed, police said.

The driver of the van remained at the scene. No charges were expected to be filed.
The fatal accident came amid City Hall reporting record drops in pedestrian deaths.
The number of traffic-related fatalities fell to 231 in 2015 from 257 in 2014 — a drop of about 10%, officials said.
Mayor de Blasio said 2015 was the safest on city streets since 1910 — and he credited his Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eventually reduce traffic-related fatalities to zero by 2024.
Traffic-safety groups dispute the timetable, claiming that at the rate the city is implementing its agenda preventable traffic deaths won’t be brought down to zero until 2055.
