Justin Bieber scooped two of the biggest awards at the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Milan on Sunday night.
Bieber was named best male and also best worldwide act: North America, also performing his hit What Do You Mean.
Accepting his first award – he won five in total – Bieber said: “Wow,
thank you. It’s been a long couple of years, um, I just feel like this
is pretty awesome to be recognised for my music. I just want to say
thank you to all of my fans, you guys are really incredible. I want to
thank you mom and my dad, and God, and everyone who helped me get to
this place. I love you, thank you,” while second time around he added he
doesn’t take winning awards and his fans’ support for granted.
“You guys are unbelievable,” he said. “That’s where I belong, right up there on that stage.”
Having broken down in tears at the MTV
Video Music Awards in August, there was a good deal of anticipation
around his performance on Sunday, but he managed to maintain his
composure.
Singers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis opened the show, with a
performance which saw one of them suspended from the roof singing in
front of a picture of a moon.
Host Ed Sheeran told the crowd: “I’m very excited to be here, Italy is one of my favourite countries.. it’s nice to be hosting a show here.”
New Romantic veterans Duran Duran received the first ever MTV video
visionary award. The chart-topping 1980s band were given the honour for
their strong visual presence, and for influencing a generation of
musicians with some of the best pioneering music videos of all time.
