The Premier League has announced that the French national anthem, La
Marseillaise, will be played at the beginning of all matches this
weekend in memory of the victims of the Paris attacks.
Over 120 people had died in 6 different attacks around Paris, including
one outside the Stade de France when France played Germany in an
international friendly.
The entire Wembley had sang La Marseillaise when France had played England at a friendly days later, and Premier League chief Richard Scuadmore wants to show “solidarity and remembrance” with this weekend’s fixtures.
He
said: “Given how close we are as well as the long-standing relationship
that exists between the Premier League and France, playing La
Marseillaise as an act of solidarity and remembrance is the right thing
to do.”
“We were all saddened and deeply shocked by the events in
Paris last Friday, and the fact it was an attack on people enjoying
their everyday freedoms like going to a bar, a concert or a football
match resonates with football fans and the general public throughout the
UK.”
