The death toll from Wednesday’s GSM market bomb blast in
Kano has risen to 19 while over 100 others were injured as a result of
stampede after the blast.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed this while
distributing medical consumables to the CMDs of various hospitals in
Kano.
Channels Television correspondent in Kano, Idris Jibrin, also reports
that more people have been seen receiving treatment in various
hospitals within the state.
According to hospital officials, some of the victims brought to
hospitals in the state had been treated and discharged. Some underwent
surgical operations while few others were still being treated.
As some have remained in coma despite successful surgeries, many of
the victims receiving treatment could not recount exactly how the
incident happened.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has issued an order of free medical treatment for the victims of the blast.
Governor Ganduje, during an assessment visit to hospitals across the
state, said that Government would not be discouraged in fighting the
scourge of insurgency as he promised to redesign the market and make it
safer to operate.
The Governor said that government would do all it could to ensure that the victims are treated with respect, including paying compensation to those who lost their lives and property.
He said that no amount of pressure or sabotage would discourage Government’s determination in fighting insurgency.
Governor Ganduje expressed optimism that all would soon be well,
considering the military’s Operation Lafiya Dole in the north east
region.
Wednesday’s blast was the second time the GSM market was targeted by
suspected insurgents after the January 20, 2012 multiple explosions that
killed over 100 Kano residents.
It came after another devastating attack at the Kano Central Mosque sometime in November 2014.
